"Shorts" off the swords "long" swords?

I have recently done much research on this theme. In antiquity, the most common weapon is the "short" the sword, as seen in use by many of the Romans and gladiators. It is logical that the cavalry used swords and, as the Roman Spatha, giving them far enough in the battle. Over time, however, and the Roman armies were increasingly influenced by the Celts, it seems that the arms are longer and heavier. My question is actually two parts. First ... For Why else? Shortswords AFAIK were incredibly beneficial in a strict order of battle, where there was not much room for swing and stab wounds. The Romans considered the Celts in this manner, substantially all of its losses occur through ambushes. The second part is a scenario: two fencers level playing field with their weapons. One brandishes a long sword medieval, the other a Roman gladius. In the first fight, both are equipped with shields. In the second, without shields. Who wins?

Swords part of the reason for shorter were used in antiquity is a matter of engineering and metallurgy. Swords are not the force of traction beginning no more than a few feet. Another reason is that you said, short swords were ideal for training close range with large shields. The real Roman Empire was already in tatters by the second century. The step most likely to swords in part because their legions and the generals are not as well trained, and probably also because they understand more and more conquered peoples (read: the Celts) in their armies. Why bid when they have their own swords? Delete rows that become more frequent if you have a less strong disciplined a sword longer would be very beneficial because it adds to its range, and since he is not standing shoulder to shoulder more, you will not strike your own people. Now as to your scenario: as in all forms of combat, it boils down to who can impose his game on the other. If you have a smallest weapon you want to bridge the gap and make into a real fight. If you have a weapon, you want to keep your opponent from a distance and may use its footwork to stay out of reach.
