Why do people have this perception that services departments supply scams?

Examples: "replace the alternator, starter motor, batteries and cables. Now I want you to fix it. "People who have brought their vehicles to" Ma & Pa "garage" light check engine ", only to have candles, son, and fuel filter" launched "only to have the concern is always present. Why Why is it that people do not realize that they took their vehicle to the dealer for some problems initially would be hundreds if not thousands of dollars the problem fixed without repairs "uneccesary" by "Joe's Garage"?

I think people have the impression that others have said ... The dealer is too expensive (although some dealers charge the same money, work like Goodyear and Firestone dealerships) and not fixed right. But finding the independent owners often do not educate themselves as they should and the car owners end up paying for unnecessary repairs.
