Royal Engineers

Any ideas on how to find information on the ancestors of the Royal Engineers in the 1820s?

My ancestor was born 1799/1800 in England, and served in the Royal Engineers (or sappers and miners as they were called then) and in 1827 and was released in 1831 in Canada. He stood and received land from the Crown. So far I have found that the number of the name of his company commander and the date of discharge. I do not know the names of their parents, when and where he enlisted, or where exactly he was in England (although his name is common in Cornwall). Royal Engineers Museum in Great - Britain can not help. Does anyone have any idea where / how might be able to find all records surviving British soldiers? Thank you!
