Royal Scots

How important is the second button is black military jackets in the First World War?
I have two photographs First World War soldiers. One photo shows a soldier of the 9th Battalion (Royal Scots) and the second photo shows a soldier of the Royal West Kent Regiment. Both made in 1914. Both children have a black button the second button in their dresses. The buttons first, third and fourth are all bronze. A soldier is a sergeant in the private. What is the meaning of the black button and why the second button below?
Good pick up. Because it was difficult to maintain the shiny brass buttons and in good condition. If you look at World War uniforms, wearing a belt, strap or belt pouch with bullets in the chest at an angle of a shoulder size contrast. (see footnote) It is most often on the chest at the second button. Is either caused corrosion in bronze or bronze was layer button, exposing the metal Neath cheaper. If you had the element of the diagonal, you do not see the button. If they removed the element the diagonal, was on the button and look different. It was not intentional, it just happened.
