German Photo Studio

At Home Professional Photography Studio?
I want to set up my own photography studio. We have an extra bedroom, so I think it'd be feasible.
I would want to have results like what is shown here: http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-9073709-german-shepherd-2-years-old.php
I have a Canon Rebel XTi - will I be able to get pictures that crisp with it in a studio?
What would I use as the background/flooring? I'd prefer to use white and black.
What could I use for lighting that won't cost a fortune?
In home studios can be fun, but they are best if you have a lot of room. For example, to keep shadows minimized you usually want people 5-6 feet from the background. You also want your lights higher than the subject, and angled down (like the sun).
If you don't need full length (and I know lots of people that just shoot portraits or 3/4 length), it gets easier.
If you are shooting 3/4 or portrait, you can buy smaller muslin backdrops or not use as much seemless paper since you don't have to worry about the background covering the wall and the floor.
For lenses, try having someone stand where you want your subject to stand, and see what focal lengths work. If you can only get the proper framing by using say 18mm, it will be trouble because that is a wide angle length and will distort people's features.
I like the AlienBees suggestion - it is not a fortune to some but still not cheap. Try starting out with one light. If you still like what you are doing after you have it done for a while, it is easy (and addicting) to grow into 2, 3, or more lights.
