Why was World War I, followed by the appearance of a series of totalitarian governments?

Countries that emerged from the baptism of the first World War were very different from before the war. There were many countires who had a large technological leap forward, socially and economically. Others stayed that provided a very stable so far. Italy was on the winning side (if you can call it that) in the first World War, but fascism came to power in 1923. Generalissimo Franco of Spain came to power by a military coup in late 1930.
